Pest Control Special Interest
f you're thinking about buying one of those electronic gizmos that is supposed to control or repel pests,  DON'T!  Save your money!
The Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Department of Enforcement recently sent warning letters to over 60 manufacturers and retailers of these devices, demanding they prove their claims, or be subject to legal action.
This is just the latest of many efforts by the FTC
I
Ultrasonic Devices? $ave Your Money!
to deal with such devices.  Between 1985 and 1997 the FTC brought law enforcement actions against six companies for false and unsubstantiated claims--- all were resolved by consent orders.  But new ultrasonic devices quickly take their place, simply using a different sound frequency or with different claims, before the FTC can catch up with them.
There are all sorts of ultrasonic devices being sold.  Some hang around your neck to repel mosquitoes, others are for your pets, and others plug in to an electrical outlet.  Some only claim they are "helpful" when combined with other pest management techniques, but others try to claim they actually kill pests or cause them to
"run off".     None of these claims have ever been proven by
an  unbiased laboratory.  Even our (sometimes overspending)
military has a standing written policy on all such electrically operated pest control devices, that no public funds will be used to purchase them.
Don't be fooled.  If you really could control pests simply with high frequency sound (ultrasound), billions would be sold yearly---not just the thousands being sold to unwary and naive buyers.
